[xii], 79, [1] pp., with half-title. 4to. First edition of Fielding's first play, published in December 1701 "to coincide with the opening of the comedy at the Drury Lane Theatre in that month. The principal players-Robert Wilks, Colley Cibber, Anne Oldfield-were to be associated with Steele for the rest of his life, in his career as playwright and theatre governor ... Years later Steele looked back on his triumphant d├ębut: 'Nothing can make the Town so fond of a Man as a successful Play' (Steele, Apology, in Tracts, 339)" (ODNB). The play was a success and found favor with William III, who granted Steele a captaincy. An uncommon work on the market. Ashley V, p. 200-1; ESTC T40340
