Handsome full tree calf binding with decorative gilt borders to both boards, raised bands to the spine with title label in red, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, light foxing throughout that extends to some plates; two bookplates of previous owners, a beautiful copy. Astor chose four of his favourite literary characters; Hester Prynne, Rip Van Winkle, The Pathfinder and The Last of the Mohicans to stand at each corner of the grand staircase here at Two Temple Place.
