THE QUEEN OF THE TWELFTH-CAKES; A CHRISTMAS TALE FOR CHILDREN. BY THE AUTHOR OF "THE LITTLE FIR TREE," 1852
Dedicated to the children of the Rev.. T.L. Claughton, Christmas, 1852. 8vo., 23 manuscript pages in holograph, with hand-illustrated (in ink and India white) wrappers, title page and frontispiece, all of which are mounted to a plain white stock. Front and rear wrappers rubbed with slight smearing of the illustrations, else very good. The frontispiece is an elaborate drawing signed in ink "Edward Bradley, Xmas, 1852. Bound in later full morocco with title in gilt on the spine. The Rev. Edward Bradley, "Cuthbert Bede", 1827-1890, was educated at Durham University; and ordained in 1850. He contributed regularly to Punch and other periodicals; was author of ADVENTURES OF MR. VERDANT GREEN, AN OXFORD FRESHMAN, illustrated by the author, London, 1853; PHOTOGRAPHIC PLEASURES, PORTRAYED WITH PEN AND PENCIL, London, 1855, (he was known to have been the first to satirize photography); TALES OF COLLEGE LIFE, London, 1856; and many other titles including FAIRY FABLES, by Cuthbert Bede, with illustrations by Alfred Crowquill, London, 1858, containing a collection of five stories including both THE QUEEN OF THE TWELFTH CAKES - thus the illustrations in this manuscript, which were accomplished presumably by the author are unpublished and unique.
