A native of Rio de Janeiro, Taunay (1843-1899), historian, lexicographer and political figure, was also one of the foremost Brazilian novelists of the later nineteenth century, as well as a distinguished politician. His literary works-most written under pseudonyms such as Sílvio Dinarte-include the novels Inocência (1872) and O encilhamento (1893).
