Ord probably bought the set at Millar's shop in the Strand. Volume I with the errata leaf and blank leaves at end. A well preserved set, very good, with superficial cracking to hinges and chips to heads and heels of spine. Label missing from spine of Vol. III. Contents quite bright. A quite nice set overall. "In June 1748 Millar advanced Fielding ?600 on Tom Jones, and by September Thomas Birch reported that three of the six volumes of Fielding's masterpiece were printed. Certain privileged readers who obtained pre-publication copies of the first two were warm in commending it. Lyttelton, who had urged Fielding to undertake the novel and read it in manuscript, was especially enthusiastic; in dedicating the book to him Fielding returned the favour, declaring that he had based the character of the benevolent Squire Allworthy on Lyttelton and Ralph Allen. But business and a severe attack of gout prevented him from finishing the work speedily, and public impatience to read it grew to such a pitch that the entire first edition of 2000 copies was bought up before the announced date of publication, 10 February 1749.
