A History of Greece; From the Earliest Period to the Close of the Generation Contemporary with Alexander the Great [Twelve Volumes]
John Murray. Hardcover. London, 1869. 8vo, full polished red calf. Complete in twelve volumes. A new edition. Beautifully bound in full polished calf by an unidentified contemporary bindery, spines in six compartments with morocco title labels and elaborate gilt inlays. All volumes in excellent condition with fine contents some rubbing to bindings at seams, with the exception of one volume with notable scuffing and tears to head of spine. Hinges strong. A few stray scuffs to spines at heads and heels. Complete with portrait and all maps and charts. A very nice set in its second edition, in excellent condition overall. "Although as biased as Macaulay's History of England, and less scholarly than Mommsen's Roman History, Grote's History of Greece can be bracketed with these two works. Like them, it was received with universal acclimation. (It) shaped the European conception of the subject matter throughout the nineteenth century , and still merits respect as a monument of industrious Victorian scholarship." - Printing and the Mind of Man, for the 1846 first edition. . Very Good. 1869. Second Edition.
