Andrew Melrose, 1919, Cloth, Book Condition: Very Good.. 1st Edition; no date [ca 1919] xxii,183pp, 47 plate leaves (including photographic frontipiece, 83 photographs, 5 track maps), 70 sketches and maps in text, 1 folding map, Original blue cloth with gilt ship illustration of Aurora at sea on front board & spine lettering. Spence 354; Renard 421; Rosove 87/A1. Davis was captain of "Aurora," on Mawson's first Antarctic expedition. Davis was master on the "Aurora" on the Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911-14 and was chief officer on the "Nimrod" with Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09. The popular official account of the Australasian expedition was by Mawson, "The Home of the Blizzard". In Mawson's preface to this volume, he says Davis' book details the voyages of the ship, a gap not covered in his account. He states the "oceanographic investigations they have carried out . (are) research which in scientific value is comparable with that accomplished ashore"."disproving the existence of certain doubtful islands which up to that time had appeared on the charts of the region."
