[circa 1719] Hand colored etching on paper 13 1/4 x 19 5/8", plate margins approx. 9 1/4 x 11 3/4", colors are very bright; very good. Plate numbered 32, from Metamorphasibus Insectorum Surinamensium. Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was a German-born naturalist and scientific illustrator, a descendant of the Frankfurt branch of the Swiss Merian family, founders of one of Europe's largest publishing houses in the 17th century. Her detailed observations and documentation of the metamorphosis of the butterfly make her a seminal figure in the field of entomology.
