London: Bradbury and Evans; Chapman and Hall, 1843–8 - 5 volumes, small octavo (172 x 112 mm). Recent red morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, single filet to covers in gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, original cloth covers bound in at back of each volume. Enclosed in a custom red slipcase. A fine, attractively bound set. A Christmas Carol with hand-coloured frontispiece, 3 full-page hand-coloured plates, illustrations in the text; other titles with frontispiece, engraved title, and illustrations in the text. First editions of Dicken's famous sequence of annual Christmas books. A Christmas Carol is the second issue with "Stave One" as the first chapter heading and a red and blue title page; The Chimes has the first state of the vignette title page; The Cricket on the Hearth has the first state of the advertisement leaf; The Battle of Life has the fourth state of the title vignette, all as described by Smith. A Christmas Carol, first published in 1843, proved so popular that Dickens produced a small festive book for each successive Christmas. The final book, The Haunted Man, was published in 1848, after Dickens postponed the planned book for Christmas 1847 to focus on completing his novel Dombey and Son. Smith II, 4-6, & 8.
