A Double Barrelled Detective Story
New York: Harper and Brothers, 1902. First Edition. Very Good. First edition. (Printed on wove paper; endpapers each in both A and B states; BAL assigns no priority for either issue.) 179pp. Original red cloth with gilt stamping. Very Good+, lacking jacket with two droplets on spine, which is also a bit darkened and sunned; head a bit worn, internally quite bright with a few scattered corner creases and reading smudges. All seven of Lucius Hitchcock's illustrations present. Twain's satire of the turn-of-the-century detective novel, plopping Sherlock Holmes in the US of A and unraveling his credo of logical deduction.
