A Remarkable Property of Plane Waves in General Relativity, in Reviews of Modern Physics, Volume 37, Number 1
American Institute of Physics, New York, NY 1965 - Signed and dated by the author. In 1964, in the words of Kip Thorne, Penrose "revolutionized the mathematical tools that we use to analyze the properties of spacetime." Scarce original technical article by Roger Penrose in which the complete general-relativistic plane-wave spacetimes (gravitational, electromagnetic, or both) are examined in relation to the focusing effect they exert on null cones. Null cones (light cones) describe the path that a flash of light from a single event would take through spacetime. Penrose's work in this field lead to technical breakthroughs, more than one (the Penrose limit and the Newman-Penrose formalism) bearing his name. This journal article was published relatively early in Penrose's career when he was an academic researcher at Birkbeck College in London. Very rare, likely the only signed copy of this journal article in existence. Softcover, some wear to covers, small portion at top of spine has been carefully repaired. Small closed tear to top rear panel. Internally clean and tight, unmarked. About very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
