Alice's Adventures in Wonderland [together with] Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There.
London: Macmillan and Co., 1866 & 1872 - 2 works, octavo (174 × 121 mm). Recent red crushed morocco by Bayntun, titles to spines gilt, gilt motifs blocked to spine compartments, Mad Hatter and Queen of Hearts blocked to front covers gilt, turn-ins and edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Housed in a custom red cloth slipcase. Spines a little faded, some occasional faint foxing to contents. An excellent set, attractively bound. Illustrated throughout by Sir John Tenniel. First published editions. Famously, the original printing of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was recalled by Dodgson. For the first published edition the book was entirely reset by Richard Clay and was published in November 1865, although dated 1866 in line with contemporary practice for books intended for the Christmas market. It is this version which formed the basis for all future Macmillan editions. Through the Looking-Glass was also published for the Christmas market and bears the following year's date in its imprint. It was actually published in December 1871, in an edition of 9,000 copies. Williams, Madan & Green 46 & 84. [Attributes: First Edition]
