Art-Rite. 4 Issues: no. 2 (Summer 1973); no. 4 (Christmas 1973); no. 5 (Spring 1974); no. 7 (Autumn 1974)
Art-Rite Publishing Co 1973-74, New York - Four early issues of this seminal downtown avant-garde art 'zine, published between 1973 and 1978 (running to 18 issues total) and distributed for free on the streets around SoHo and Chelsea. In direct opposition to mainstream art-critical journals of the period, Art-Rite stuck to a low-budget, proto-punk aesthetic and focused its sights on the work of unrecognized, marginal artists who would become pioneers of the interdisciplinary and performance-oriented art boom of the late Seventies and Eighties. The magazine's covers became a cause celebre in their own right, typically featuring edgy work by artists with cult followings; covers on the current issues are by William Wegman (no. 2); Vito Acconci (no. 7); Christo (no. 5); and Yuri (no. 4). Never abundant either institutionally or in commerce; this is an attractive small clutch of issues from the first year of publication. Four quarto issues. Staple-bound newsprint wrappers; each issue ranging from 16 to 32pp; illus. Printed on newsprint; uniform toning to margins; no. 2 with small chip to bottom corner of front wrapper (away from image); Very Good overall, and better than typically seen. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
