Mani (Signed And Doodled By The Author To Theodore Stephanides)
The First UK printing published by John Murray in 1958. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. A little pushing at the spine ends. Light fading to the spine which has slightly encroached onto the front cover. Boards lightly marked places. Gilt tilting and motif remain bright. Light toning to the text block. The WRAPPER is in Very Good++ or better condition and is clipped (as commonly found) with the publisher's revised price present. A little minor rubbing and toning to the spine and rear cover with a few nicks. The John Craxton designed wrapper looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival protector. The book has been INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the first blank end paper: 'To Theodore Stephanides, with many greetings from Patrick Leigh Fermor, London, April 1964'. The author has also doodled a copy of the eye and the greek wording (relating to page 187 : 'Where is Alexander The Great...') from the frontispiece design. There is also the name in pencil of "T.Stephanides' to the upper front end paper. Theodore Stephanides was a Greek poet, author, doctor and naturalist. He is best remembered as the friend and mentor of the famous naturalist Gerald Durrell, featuring in many of Durrell's books including 'My Family and Other Animals, Birds, Beasts and Relatives', Durrell's brother Lawrence's 'Prospero's Cell', and Henry Miller's 'The Colossus of Maroussi'. He was a close friend of Leigh Fermor. A polymath, Stephanides was respected as a scientist and doctor, and acclaimed as a poet in both Greek and English, and translated a sizeable body of Greek poetry to English: notably a significant body of work by Greek poet Kostis Palamas and the Greek near-epic work Erotocritos. He was also a noted biologist and scientist who has three species named after him. He also wrote a definitive biological treatise on the freshwater life in Corfu. His autobiographical account of the Battle of Crete - 'Climax in Crete', and his fictitious account of Corfu and the Ionian Islands - 'Island Trails were widely read', but are now sadly out of print. A significant association copy and very scarce with such attributes.
