A GENERAL TREATISE OF ARTILLERY: OR, GREAT ORDNANCE.
London, printed by A. G. and J. P. for Obadiah Blagrave, 1683. Writ in Italian by Tomaso Moretii of Brescia Ingenier first to the Emperour, and now to the most Serene Republick of Venice. Translated into English, with Notes thereupon, and some additions out of French for Sea-Gunners. With an Appendix of Artificial Fireworks for War and Delight; by Sir Abraham Dager Kt. Ingenier. Second English edition, 1683. Small 8vo, 180 x 110 mm, 7¼ x 4¼ inches, woodcut frontispiece, 7 folding woodcut plates, 1 folding table plus 8 additional plates on geometry, 2 are folding, which are not called for. Pages 6, 1-124, (4), LACKING 2 LEAVES OF PRELIMS (A2 AND A3) containing the Dedication to George Wharton, often missing from copies of the second edition, and also lacking 2 leaves of adverts at the end which are present in some copies, the 4 unnumbered pages at the end contain A Definition of Geometry which is sometimes found at the end of the prelims, full panelled calf with blind tooled decoration, rebacked in lighter calf with raised bands, blind rules and gilt lettered morocco label. Corners slightly worn, 2 armorial bookplates on endpapers, small light stain to a couple of margins, 1 fold of folding table partly split and repaired neatly, plates very lightly browned, 2 small closed tears and slight creasing to fore-edge of 1 folding plate, small closed tear to inner margin of 1 plate, all neatly repaired, 1 plate slightly trimmed at fore-edge, not affecting the image but just shaving the text, all still legible. Binding tight and firm. A very good copy of a scarce military and firework book. Moretti's Trattato dell'artiglieria was first published in Venice in 1665 and the first English edition in 1673. This second edition has the addition of a section on military and recreational fireworks and a Definition of Geometry. Our copy collates as the Macclesfield copy except that our Definition is bound at the end and not in the prelims. See Sotheby's Library of the Earls of Macclesfield, Part 10, Nos 3672-3674; (2 copies lack the dedication and all copies lack the advert leaves); Chris Philip, A Bibliography of Firework Books, page 99, M180.1 (erroneously listing 74 plates). 2 of the plates show recreational fireworks; ESTC R37646.
