Map of the County of Bedford, from an Actual Survey made in the year 1825
London: Greenwood and Co., 26 January, 1831. Single sheet, steel engraving by J. & C. Walker. Size: 68 x 57 cm. (27 x 22½ inches). Original colour with later additions. Fine condition. Large and attractive map of Bedfordshire with a decorative vignette view of Woburn Abbey, seat of the Duke of Bedford, lower right. During the 18th century each county map was a separate project sponsored by the local gentry. By 1800 nearly all English counties had been surveyed. In the early 19th century two enterprises attempted to survey all the English counties: the brothers Christopher and John Greenwood, and Andrew Bryant. This map comes from the Greenwoods' Atlas of the Counties of England from Actual Surveys Made from the Years 1817-1832, which was published in parts but never completed.
