Trials for Adultery, or the History of Divorces. Being Select Trials at Doctors Commons. 7 Volumes (Complete Set)
Printed for S. Bladon, London 1779 - Octavos. Variously paginated. Includes 20 full-page copperplate engravings. Bound in late 19th century full plum straight-grained morocco by Morrell. Signed (in type) on the verso of the front flyleaves by Morrell. The bindings show some rubbing and wear, and there are spots of abrasions on some of the hinges and spine ends. A few of the raised bands are bumped or scuffed. Still, an attractive set overall. The gilt is still bright and the bindings are sound. Gilt inner dentelles, and all edges gilt. Text blocks are sound. The text in most of the volumes is clean, although some of the pages will show some foxing, and a few pages have heavy foxing and smudging from handling. A few of the pages have been re-margined at the fore edges, not affecting the text. Each volume has a bookplate on the front pastedown of "C. L. F. Robinson, Newport, R.I." The bookplate shows a crest with a stag standing above a helmet and a shield with three other stags. The motto on the banner is "Virtute non Verbis." We believe this is Charles L. F. Robinson, who was the President of Colt Firearms from 1911 to 1916. The bookplate is a listed bookplate and was engraved by Edwin Davis French (1851-1906). Davis produced over 300 fine bookplates between 1893 and his death, and he was a founding member of the American Fine Arts Society. Many of his clients were members of the Grolier Club, although we do not know if Robinson was a member. Volumes 1-3 are dated 1779 on the copyright pages; Volumes 4-7 are dated 1780. Some plates in all volumes have 1780 dates. Volumes 5 & 6 also have plates dated 1796 and 1797. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
