A Yellow Journalist
London Sydney Appleton 1906 - Octavo. First UK edition. Publisher's bright yellow cloth boards, with title and decoration in black to front and spine. Unfortunately the the yellow is rather prone to soiling. Spine and boards lightly sunned and toned. A very good copy of a book that is pretty hard to come by. Internally bright and clean, light toning to endpapers. "Property Room" stamp to front flyleaf and half title. Gutter starting to page 170. Basically, despite its only besetting sin being that it was bound in yellow cloth and thus doomed to look a bit grubby, this is a fascinating and important, oft overlooked book. The events are at least partially fictionalised, Rhoda Massey, our intrepid heroine ends up in some incredibly convoluted situations in her search for all forms of truth; but the importance lies in the book being grounded in Michelson's own exeriences as a female investigative reporter, her Jewishness and her reporting work on the front line of institutional racism during the annexation of Hawaii, the "battle [of] the white man against the brown; might against right; strength against weakness."; the intensely complex and often transgressive crossing and recrossings of racial and gender boundaries in the pursuit of "the story" and the very clear way in which Miriam Michelson has sublimated real world frustrations and problems into her fiction; again a potential case of fictional women being able to say things about real men, that real women can't. When put across the table from Shiel and Rohmer's "Yellow Peril" fiction it makes them look rather uninformed and somewhat childish. Scarce. WTPC7 [Attributes: Hard Cover]
