Thirty-Two Bookplates by Andrew & Irena Sibley
Stoke-on-Trent [U.K.] : The Lytlewode Press, 2011. Folio, full ostrich, pp. 80, containing 32 original bookplates by the Andrew Sibley and the late Irena Sibley, Andrew Sibley's bookplates each hand-coloured and signed by the artist, the plates by Irena SIbley with a studio stamp, photograph frontispieces of the artist, an original scraperboard bookplate matrix by Irena Sibley and original pencil drawing by the same artist tipped-in the front, as well as an original Andrew Sibley watercolour design for a bookplate. This edition is limited to 16 copies signed by the publisher. Housed within a grand gilt-lettered clamshell box along with the publication Fifteen Bookplates by Irena SIbley, written by Robert C Littlewood, published the same day as Thirty-Two Bookplates. This similarly handsome volume is bound in gilt-lettered blue cloth and contains 15 original signed bookplates by Irena SIbley. This volume acts as a supplement to Thirty-Two Bookplates, and further demonstrates the contribution this important Melbourne artist has made towards bookplate design in Australia. Beneath these two finely bound volumes, within the clamshell box, is a hidden compartment, within which is housed stacks of loose Sibley bookplates for swapping with like-minded collectors. This magnificent and beautiful set is the latest and arguably most significant contribution that the private press publisher Robert Littlewood has made towards bookplates in Australia. Nestled within the handsome book lie not only extravagently bound tributes towards close friends the artists Irena and Andrew Sibley, but also simple and humble loose bookplates which are the objects these publications explore. Thirty-Two Bookplates was one of the final projects that Robert Littlewood worked on with the artist Irena Sibley before her passing away in 2008. In 2007 he launched her autobiography 'Self-Portrait of the artist's wife' and through a close professional and personal relationship commissioned a number of bookplates for friends of Irena Sibley's which were intended to be recorded through this extraordinary work. The personalities who are captured through Sibley's bookplates include Charles Blackman, Julian Burnside, Helen Garner, Peter Garrett, Rodney Hall, Barry Jones, Robert Juniper, Father Bob McGuire, Mirka Mora, John Olsen, Geoffrey Ricardo, John Thwaites and others. A rare, precious and unique publication on Australian bookplates.
