London: By Robert Barker Printer to the Kings most Excellent Maiestie, 1609. [iv], 135, [13]; 112 pp. Two parts, each with title page and pagination. Quarto (7-1/4" x 5-1/4"). Eighteenth-century speckled calf, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, joints discreetly reinforced. A few minor scuffs to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, corners bumped and somewhat worn, hinges starting, a few partial cracks to text block. Text printed within ruled borders, woodcut head-pieces, large woodcut royal arms on p. [iv] of Part I and p. [2] of Part II. Moderate toning, minor worming and dampstaining to margins of a some leaves, soiling to title page of Part I, early owner signature to its verso. An attractive copy. $850. * Second and final edition, one of three issues from 1609. James I published this work anonymously in 1607 to encourage his subjects to remain loyal to the throne. Due perhaps to its anonymous nature and part-Latin text, the work received little attention and, as one would expect, disappointing sales.
