Leiden & Rotterdam: Hack, 1668. 1st edition. Graaf, Regnier de (1641-73). De virorum organis generationi inservientibus. . . . 8vo. Engraved title, [30], 234, [14]pp. Portrait engraved by GĂ©rard Edelinck & 11 folding engraved plates. Leiden: Hack, 1668. 155 x 95 mm. Full modern mottled calf, gilt, 17th century style, front hinge weak. A little browning & soiling, tear through pl. VI but still intact. Very good copy. Modern bookplate of Maurice L. Richardson.First Edition. Garrison-Morton 1210: "Exact and detailed account of the male reproductive system." This preceded by four years Graaf's account of the female reproductive system ("Graafian follicle," G-M 1209). Graaf's two books on the reproductive system were the most complete and best illustrated of several publications on the subject which were inspired by Harvey's 1651 De Generatione. Nevertheless, Graaf was embroiled in controversy with Swammerdam who submitted a paper and specimens to the Royal Society claiming priority in research on the reproductive system (his Miraculorum Naturae, sive Uteri Muliebris Fabrica,1672; G-M 1211). Graaf replied to Swammerdam's claims in his Partium Genitalium Defensio (1673). Their dispute was very helpful in spreading the idea that mammals have ovaries, although the Royal Society gave neither priority in their claims, awarding it to Stensen instead. See Murphy 379, reproducing plate from De Virorum Organis Generatio showing anatomy of normal prostate. Garrison 264 & 251. Kiefer 244 with later edition only.
