Autographed Letter Signed
Washington, 1858. unbound. 1 page on blind-stamped stationery, 10 x 8 inches, Washington, April 28, 1858. Written by the Secretary of War, who later served as a Brigadier General for the Confederacy and was killed in action at Abingdon. In this letter, he secretly uses his position as President Buchanan's Secretary of War to transfer armaments to the South and dodges an offer to get his son into West Point, in part: "...I will add, that the appointments were made before the receipt of Mr. McAdoo's letter, and there was no refusal or acceptance, the application coming too late." Horizontal folds, paperclip stain in the top margin, smudge in the left margin, and a ghost impression of text from another letter. Very good(-) condition.
