Loujon Press, New Orleans 1963 - 4to. One of only 777 copies printed. Signed by Bukowski, using thick silver ink, on the front endpaper, and dated, "6-2-63". Arguably Bukowski's most famous book, which collects poetry (66) written between the years 1955-1963. Individual poems merge to form together a body of work unrivalled in kind and very nearly unequalled in quality by Bukowski's contemporaries. But this title was surely enhanced by the skills and dedication of his publisher, Jon Webb, who along with his wife, Gypsy Lou, produced a masterpiece of presentation. The book was lovingly printed one page at a time, handfed with 12-point Garamond Old Style for the poems, 18-point Pabst O.S. for the titles -- to an ancient 8 x 12 Chandler & Price letterpress; on Linweave Spectra paper throughout, 320 lb. for the cover, 160 lb. for the jacket, 75 lb. for the text, in shades of white, wine, stone, saffron, bayberry, peacock, ivory, bittersweeet, gobelin & tobasco." The printing, all manual, was done through the steamy months of June to Septembeer 1963, in a slave quarters workshop back of a sagging ex-mansion in the French Quarter, New Orleans; and hand bound in October of the same year. Krumhansl 12. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
