Philosophical Investigations.
Oxford: Basil Blackwell,, 1953. Translated by G. E. M. Anscombe. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. Parallel German–English text. With the errata slip tipped in to front pastedown. Extremities lightly rubbed, spine ends bruised, otherwise a bright, clean copy in the creased and chipped dust jacket, spine sunned with some minor loss to head and foot, joints delicate. First edition, first impression, of Wittgenstein's second philosophical masterpiece, published two years after his death. Philosophical Investigations strives to expose "fallacies in the traditional way of thinking about language, truth, thought, intentionality, and, perhaps mainly, philosophy. In this sense, it is conceived of as a therapeutic work, viewing philosophy itself as therapy" (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Raymond Monk praised Anscombe for her "most skilful and sensitive translation. It is cause for rejoicing that she will translate the material for subsequent volumes of Wittgenstein's works" (Fann, p. 213).
