The Antient and Modern History of The Loyal Town of Rippon
Thomas Gent 1733 - Later binding: half bound in green stained leather with green boards. Spine with gilt title and gilt bands, now somewhat rubbed. Internally, front hinge reinforced with tape after ffep. Binding tight. Bookplate to front pastedown. Plan of Rippon to front, correctly folded but with small repaired tear by margin. Title page slightly offset and with period inscription to top. Further woodcuts throughout, including full page plates of Fountains Abbey, Beverley, Rippon, St Mary's Abbey York, Knaresborough church and St Germain's Selby. Double page plates of the monuments of Walter Grey and William de Greenfield. Text in good order, darkened consistent with age and with no faults. The book predominantly focuses on the churches and church history but begins with a poem about Studley Park (by Aram), followed by a poem on country life before leading into a history of Rippon. This in turn, starts with a general history of religion before he finally focuses on Rippon. Despite this, Gent offers an alternative and fantastical view of early Christian development in The British Isles. The second section of the book deals more briefly with other towns including Pontefract, Wakefield, Leeds, Knaresborough, Keighley and others. The book comprises of: plan; title; preface (xvi); dedication; text (165pp); self-congratulatory page; Journey into Yorkshire text (66pp); The Happy Reign An Eclogue (poem, 6pp); Her Majesty's Grotto (poem, 2pp); adverts (including a woodcut of a printer's shop, 5pp); list of subscribers (2pp). (179Ud3) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
