Cobbett was tried for inciting West Country labourers to violence and rick burning in the Weekly Political Register. Pearl notes that 'In his 68th year, he brilliantly conducted his own defence and thoroughly discomfited the Government by bringing Lords Grey, Melbourne, Durham, Palmerston, Goderich, and Brougham to the court on subpoena'. The jury divided equally and was discharged.
