![]() Mazeppa John Murray, London 1819 - 1st edition, 2nd issue with the imprint of the printer on the verso of page 71 (not page 70). Original brown wrappers, uncut, rebacked, very good. Mazeppa is a fine poem but it is that which is attached at the end that rings most sharply today. It is titled "A Fragment" and truthfully so, but what a fragment. It is the opening chapter of Byron's contribution to the famed ghost story entertainment that produced Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and John Polidori's The Vampyre.
