Thomas Goulard, 1697-1784, was a member of the famous medical faculty in Montpellier, and used extract of Saturn (a mixture of lead monoxide in wine vinegar) as an external treatment for strains, inflammation, and also gunshot wounds. Although 'Goulards Extract' was not recommended for internal use, the side effects of lead poisoning led to its gradual abandonment.
