The Memorial. Portrait of a Family
1932 - First edition. 8vo., original red weave cloth, dust jacket. London, Published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: ?To Stephen, with love from Christopher, in memory of our lunches in the Kleiststrasse and our evenings at Baabe railway station - March 1934? Stephen Spender moved to Berlin in 1931, staying in a pension on Motzstrasse, just around the corner from Isherwood, and they spent a great deal of time together. The Kleistrasse was just a few minutes walk away. Spender remembered Isherwood at this time as ?surrounded by the models for his creations, like one of those portraits of a writer by a bad painter, in which the writer is depicted meditating in his chair whilst the characters of his novels radiate round him under a glowing cloud of dirty varnish, not unlike the mote-laden lighting of Frälein Thurau's appartment [where Isherwood was staying]? (Parker). A near fine copy, in the dust jacket designed by John Banting, slightly rubbed at the head and tail of the spine. Isherwood's second novel, rare in this condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
