New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1903, 1905, 1907, and 1910 respectively.. FIRST EDITIONS. 4 volumes; large octavo (25 x 18cm). Pictorial title pages. Illustrated with numerous black and white plates with tissue guard, and ornate head and tail pieces. Finely bound in recent half scarlet calf over original decorative cloth boards stamped in black, red and gilt, top edges gilt, housed in a fleece-lined red buckram slipcase with ribbon pull. A lovely fine set, handsomely presented. A superb, complete set of Arthurian Tales both written and illustrated by Howard Pyle of Wilmington, Delaware. An art teacher at Drexel University, he later taught artists of the Brandywine school, including N.C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish and Jessie Willcox Smith. His 1883 classic The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood remains in print to this day, and his other books, frequently with mediaeval European settings, included a four-volume set on King Arthur that cemented his reputation. He wrote an original work, Otto of the Silver Hand (1888) and also illustrated historical and adventure stories for periodicals such as Harper's Weekly and St. Nicholas. His Men of Iron was made into a movie in 1954, The Black Shield of Falworth. He spent the last year of his life in Florence, Italy, where he died.
