John Murray, London 1836 - Handsome original antique leatherbound edition of Journey Through Arabia Petraea to Mount Sinai, and the Excavated City of Petra, the Edom of the Prophecies, printed more than 178 years ago.This book is bound in full leather, with gilt decoration and gilt-lettered spine, with raised bands. It was published in 1836 by John Murray, Albemarle Street, London, and is the First Edition in English of the text by Marquis Léon Emmanuel Simon Joseph de Laborde. Laborde was an important early 19th-century French artist, art scholar and archaeologist, known through both his writings and his art. This book is his account of a visit to the newly-discovered site of Petra, illustrated with lithographs of his own drawings as well as a number by Louis Linant de Bellefonds. It includes various maps and plans, and an introductory essay on different aspects of the region, such as travel, pilgrimage, and trade.The book measures 22 x 14.5 cm [8-1/2" x 5-3/4"] and has 331 pages. The Map of Arabia Petraea unfolds to 10-1/2" x 8-1/2". There are more than two dozen full-page views, along with numerous engraved illustrations in the text, and a full-page map titled Plan of the Ruins of Petra, Drawn on the Spot in 1829 by Leon de Laborde. The original silk ribbon page marker is present and intact, and the endpapers are richly marbled. A tiny bookseller's label is affixed on the front endpaper, along with a bookplate from the library of Garry Owen. Garry Owen was a vice president of Aramco (Arabian American Oil Company) and an envoy to the court of King Saud bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
