A Map of the Neighbourhood of Havant [for] J Purse Linen Draper, Hosier, Haberdasher, &c East Street, Havant
[N.p., c.1810]. Map 9.5 x 13.9 cm, engraved on laid paper measuring 12.5 x 19.5 cm, recently mounted. The map covers the left two-thirds of the image, with a circular cartouche advertising Purse's business, the map title engraved underneath. Very good. An extremely rare piece of cartographic ephemera: a business card designed and engraved as a map by William Constable. In the very early years of the 19th century Constable had engraved a similar map to advertise his and his brother Daniel's linen business in Brighton. They subsequently sold the business and emigrated to the U.S. in 1806, before returning two years later. Their sister Mildred married John Purse in 1809, who also went into business as a draper in the town of Havant. The business wasn't successful and the couple soon moved back to her home town of Horley. Ten years later they too emigrated to America, eventually settling in Indiana.
