Commencement of the Cascade or Great Falls on the Columbia River.
U.S. Government. 1851. - Lithograph, image 4 1/2 x 17 inches on sheet 5 x 19 inches, folded as issued. Trimmed to neat line at upper right half of the image (probably when bound into volume), otherwise very good. This panoramic view is from A Report in the Form of a Journal, to the Quartermaster General, of the March of the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen to Oregon, from May 10 to October 5, 1849, by Major O. Cross, Quartermaster United States Army. 31st. Congress, 2nd. Session, Senate Doc. 1, Part II (Wagner Camp, 181-3). The Riflemen under the command of Cross were the first United States military expedition to travel the full length of the Oregon Trail from Fort Leavenworth to Fort Vancouver from May to October 1849, providing in many cases the first pictorial documention of locations along the Oregon Trail. There was another foldout view to accompany this one: Continuation of the View of the Cascade or Great Falls of the Columbia River. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
