Styx: bulletin skupiny Lacoste [Styx: bulletin of the Lacoste group], no. 1
Brno, 1966. Folio (30 × 21.5 cm). Original side-stapled wrappers with typewritten title and small original watercolor illustration; 38 pp. of mimeographed typescript, with small photographic prints, and and [3] leaves of original photographs. Last three leaves detached from staples; upper spine extremity split; still a rather good copy of a fragile publication. First issue of the rare surrealist samizdat journal Styx, issued in Czech with partial translations into French, from 1966 to 1969. The preface states that "bureaucratic hurdles" prevented the publication of a fully illustrated, offset-printed volume showcasing the art and writing of the Lacoste group, a Brno-based association of surrealist artists. In lieu of the former, this first issue of Styx can be considered Lacoste's manifesto: it includes a survey detailing the members' definitions of the movement, their key influences, and thinly-veiled questions about surrealism's role in a repressive political environment. A short "sociological" study explicitly mentions ways in which surrealism survives in Czechoslovakia despite the state's official stance against it. Also included are poetic texts, an experimental surrealist play, Pajurek's photo-illustrated lyrical "found dictionary" and a list of visual works, accompanied by seven photographic prints (four more showing work by Frantisek Deák were apparently removed by the editors, because he had left the group in August 1966). This is no. 60 of 98 numbered copies, signed by all four authors, and inscribed to Danish artist Henny Kjer. All in all, five numbers were issued (numbered 1-7, but with nos. 2 and 5 never published). The print runs ranged from 98 to 128 copies. A very uncommon glimpse into one of the various ways surrealism survived in post-war Czechoslovakia, along with the activities of Skupina Ra and other groups. Not in KVK, OCLC. The only institutional holdings we can find are at the Centre Pompidou.
