Papuas iz Gondurasa: bred v trekh chastiakh [The Papuan from Honduras: madness in three acts]
Soviet Union: self-published, 1980. Original typescript to rectos only, on at least two kinds of paper stock; in the original paper envelope. Lacking title leaf (possibly removed in order to avoid legal difficulties); envelope and a few leaves lightly creased and discolored. Samizdat edition of this novel by Shinkarev, the founder and ideologist of the "Mit'ki" group, an important movement in Leningrad underground culture in the 1980s. "The main artistic achievement of the group was its ritualized lifestyle [...] According to Shinkarev, Mitki dressed like outcast: striped sailor shirts (the Soviet bohemian uniform inherited from the Leningrad neorealists), old quilted jackets, Russian felt boots, and mangy fur hats with earflaps. Mitki drank from morning till night, but only the cheapest vodka and rotgut wine..." (Volkov 530). Aesthetically, Mitki were part of the larger tendency to embrace naive and neo-primitivist forms of art in the Soviet underground, which simultaneously looking back to the surrealist work of writers such as the Oberiuty Kharms and Vvedensky, and other representatives of the Russian historical avantgarde. Provenance of this copy: through the trade (St. Petersburg), from the collection of Ivan Sotnikov (born 1961), a key figure in Leningrad underground art and one of the pioneers of the naive "neo-primitivist" movement. Not in KVK, OCLC, which show no samizdat copies of Shinkarev's works.
