Oxford - The University Press, 1845 Book. Good. Hardcover. Two volumes of the works of Richard Hooker. With the bookplate of Sir Andrew Vincent Corbet, 2nd Baronet Corbet. Richard Hooker was an English priest in the Church of England and influential theologian. He defended the role of redeemed reason which informed the theology of the seventeenth century. He has been regarded as the originator of the Anglican via media between Protestantism and Catholicism. With a short biography of the author by Isaac Walton. Hooker's best known work is his Lawes which is the majority of this work. Lawes of Ecclesiastical Politie outlines the general principles of Puritanism as found in the Admonition. Condition: In original quarter cloth bindings with paper covered boards. Externally, sound with slight rubbing to the joints and to the spines. Backstrip to volume II is lifting at the rear joint, which is tender. Rear hinge to volume II is weak and held by cords only, may detach in postage. Front hinge to volume II is slightly strained but firm. Rear hinge to volumeI has practically failed and is held by one cord only resulting in the lifting of bakstrip. Several spots to boards and chipping to the extremities. Spotting to the spine labels. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of both volumes, Andrew Vincent Corbet Bart. Internally, both volumes are generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are slightly age toned with offsetting to endpapers and scattered spots throughout. Overall: GOOD..
