The Hunting of the Snark. An Agony in Eight Fits [Kelliegram Binding]
London: Macmillan and Company, 1876. 83 pp. Approximately 5 x 7 1/4". Twelfth thousand. Bound by Kelly & Sons in dark green, crushed, levant morocco, gilt Kelliegram stamp to rear turn-in, spine tooled and illustrated in gilt, gilt dentelled, front cover illustrated with an inlaid vignette of the "Baker" (from the illustration on p. 5) in multi-colored morocco, light and professional repairs to back board along spine, all edges gilt, red silk endpapers, silk bookmark is a bit frayed and worn, minor smudges to margins of a few pages, very faint gift inscription on half-title page, very good + condition. A beautiful example of an early Kelliegram binding by the Kelly & Sons bindery. Founded in 1770, the company had one of the longest runs in the history of the binding trade in London, carried onwards to a great success by members of the Kellie family, well into the 1930's. Lewis Carroll's nonsense poem, written between 1874 an 1876, borrowed the setting and several characters from his "Through the Looking Glass" and followed a bizarre crew in their search of a whimsical creature. Unlike Carroll's earlier works, this one was not written specifically for children.
