Dennis Edwards & Co, 1899, Decorative Cloth, Book Condition: very good/good, Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket (as published), First Edition. (An Album of 250 Choice Photographic Engravings Consisting of Beautiful Views of Colonial Scenery, Interesting Phases of Colonial Life, & Characteristic Pictures of the Chief Cities & Towns in South Africa.) Green buckram cloth binding with title in gold on spine and again on front cover in large artistic gilt lettering set in an art-nouveau border of thistles & leaves in black. The end-paper bears the following inscription -- "Presented to Miss Zillah Gipsy Smith in remembrance of her visit to Port Elizabeth, South Africa. September 1904 from Evangelical Free Church Council - N. Dowers - President" -- Zillah was the daughter of the famous evangelist - Gypsy Smith (1860 - 1947) - One of the highlights of his life was his trip to South Africa in 1904 (age 44). He took his wife along. His daughter, Zillah (age 20) was the soloist. They spent six months there. He closed out in Cape Town on May 10th seeing some 3,000 come to the inquiry rooms during his crusade there. A tent meeting in Johannesburg started on June 9th in a 3,000 seat tent. He finally left in September, and it was estimated that 300,000 attended his meetings with 18,000 decisions for Christ during the whole African tour. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
