Fairy Tales. Translated by Mrs Edgar Lucas.
New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1909 - Quarto. Original limp reverse calf with yapp edges, title to spine in gilt with pictorial decoration, moirĂ© silk endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut. Housed in a custom brown cloth chemise and slipcase. Cracking to spine, a little bit of loss to foot of spine, covers slightly rubbed, lower outer corner of front free endpaper worn, tape repair to rear free endpaper, occasional spotting to text block. An excellent copy of a notoriously fragile edition. Tipped-in colour frontispiece with tissue guard and 39 similar plates, black and white illustrations in text, all by Rackham. Signed limited US edition, one of 50 copies signed by the artist. Rackham's first version of Grimm's Fairy Tales was published in 1900; this is a revised and enlarged edition with some new illustrations, as well as others redrawn and coloured, released at the same time as a signed limited UK edition of 750 copies. The translator, Mrs Edgar Lucas, was born Alice Erichsen, the daughter of Hermann Erichsen, a Danish businessman who had settled first in Newcastle upon Tyne, then in Upper Tooting, where Alice met her husband. She made successful translations from the Danish of Hans Christian Andersen and Henrik Pontoppidan. Her sister was the artist and illustrator Nelly Erichsen (1862–1918). Latimore & Haskell p. 34; Riall p. 97. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
