A New Royal Authentic and Complete System of Universal Geography
Printed for C. Cooke, No. 17, Pater-Noster-Row (1791) 3rd edition - Massive folio. Size 15.3 x 10 inches. Complete in one volume. 990 pages in double columns. Contemporary full calf, with raised bands on spine, & maroon. Map engraved by Thos. Bowen. In generally good condition. Some rubbing on edges, with some scuffs & chips. Front board professionally reinforced. Front endpaper, one map & a plate have tear. Four folding map have a few small tears on fore edge. Small inscription head of title page. from page 900 there is a water mark top corner. Inside a few minor marks, but generally clean & tight. Directions to the Binder list at rear does not match up correctly, there are many extra illustrations present & some that are not. It would look as if they were not bound, rather than removed. Many of the illustrations were derived from Cook's Voyages, and were the most generally available representations of the natives of the Pacific Northwest, Tasmania, New Zealand, Hawaii & the Pacific accessible to the public at the time. It is these contemporary images which make this work scarce as so many have been broken up. Frontis, 57 plates with double engravings (1 is a double of the same illustration), 24 Full page engraving plates, 10 single leaf maps, 12 folding maps. Full itemized list below. This book went through 6 editions in the 1790s and was revised to reflect new discoveries and English interest in the colonization of New Holland. The book is divided along geographical lines. Much of the content deals with the South Pacific, Cook's voyages and Australia (New Holland).
