What'll You Have? A not too dry text book about cocktails, almost 200 of them -- and what to serve with them. Wines, liqueurs, cordials: how, when and where to serve them
Chicago; New York: A. L. Burt Company; [Printed by William C. Popper & Co.], 1933. Octavo (20.5 x 15 cm.), 128 pages. Illustrated, including two full-page black & white images, one of the correct glassware for various drinks. Stated FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING. An optimistic cocktail recipe manual, published on the eve of repeal. This first printing was issued November, 1933; the 21st Amendment was ratified December 5, 1933, overturning Prohibition. A prefatory note points up the ignorance of those who grew up "during the era of bathtub gin and bootleg whiskey... Their idea of hospitality, in many instances, is to place a full cocktail shaker, a full bottle of Rye or Scotch before their guests and let them entertain themselves. Now that prohibition is but a forgotten nightmare, they, too, will learn that to indulge well, but not freely, is the inherent right of every American." Julien J. Proskauer was an American magician, president of the Society of American Magicians, and friend of Harry Houdini. In addition to a number of magic-related books and novelty titles, he wrote at least four cocktail books. What'll You Have? was his first, followed by Fun at Cocktail Time (1934), More Fun at Cocktail Time (1935), and a promotional booklet for Olde Tyme Distillers Inc., titled Thirst Aid for the Ailing Party (1936). Some age-toning and light foxing throughout. Wear to head and foot of sun-faded spine; in publisher's decorated blue cloth, printed in black. Good. [OCLC locates ten copies; Noling Beverage Literature, page 336].
