Dodd Mead New York: Dodd Mead. 1895. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 1895, First Edition. Number 44 of 100 in special binding with color frontispiece portrait signed by Jefferson. Small quarto, leather-backed wooden boards with cast-iron decorative hinge-straps; the wooden boards are embossed Rip with counting-marks (four vertical marks and a diagonal mark). About Very Good: light wear to wooden edges, mild rubbing to spine; the front inner hinge has been expertly repaired and strengthened. Illustrations throughout in two states (India proof sheets and regular). Pages heavy handmade paper, unopened mainly. 199 pp., illustrated with vignettes and plates. Very RARE; no copies currently for sale of this edition, nor have any appeared recently at auction. An usual publisher's deluxe turn of the century art binding. Jefferson's dramatization of Irving's famous story was so well received that he has often been called a one-part actor, despite being known nationally for playing many other roles including some Shakespearean ones to acclaim.
