Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard, 1848 - Octavo (215 x 140 mm). Contemporary black half calf with red marbled boards, red morocco label lettered in gilt to spine, spine gilt to compartments, red marbled edges and endpapers, text in double columns. Bookplate to pastedown and ownership inscription to title page of Thomas William Kough. Small amount of loss to gilt at base of spine, corners very slightly rubbed, frontispiece laid down, occasional slight foxing, closely cropped at times not affecting text, top corner of page 299-302 slightly torn affecting pagination. Lacking the 32-page catalogue at the end. An excellent copy. Illustrated frontispiece, vignette to title page, 15 steel engravings. An attractively rebound copy of this edition, which was published in paper covers a few days prior to the completion of Lea and Blanchard's serialised publication of the novel in parts.
