Sample Formal Dinner Menu; [with one-page typed letter signed, by the White House Social Secretary]
Washington, D.C., 1956. Two sheets of White House stationery (each 23.5 x 16 cm.), though with different typographic treatments of header. The first sheet is a letter from Mary Jane McCaffree, White House Social Secretary, during the Eisenhower administration. The letter is addressed to Ferdinand Sperl, General Manager of the Hotel Pere Marquette in Illinois, who apparently informed the Eisenhowers of his hobby of collecting menus during a Presidential stay at the hotel. Interestingly, Ms. McCaffree indicates the Whitehouse does not use printed menus for guests attending meals, but she does include a sample menu for a White House formal dinner. The second leaf contains the sample menu. In a printed envelope from the Hotel Pere Marquette, with typed short description on the verso. One corner of the letter crimped, otherwise fine.
