John Kennedy
[December 1960?]. Baby gift for John F. Kennedy, Jr. [John-John] received by President-Elect John F. Kennedy and Mrs. Kennedy on the occasion of his birth November 25, 1960. Hand-painted design of three ducklings and Mother Duck wearing an appliquéd red-and-white checked gingham apron edged in red rickrack, 11.5” X 15.5” visible, framed without glass to a finished size of 12.5” X 16.5”. Signed “Patty Carter” in lower right corner. A companion piece by the artist of the Mother Hen design. Fine condition.

This lovely gift was one of many baby gifts Jacqueline Kennedy offered to her personal secretary, Mary Barelli Gallagher. It is one of only a few the secretary chose to keep [other gifts were given to charity of to friends]. In Chapter 8 of her book, “My Life with Jacqueline Kennedy”, Mary Barelli Gallagher tells about John-John’s baby gifts [New York: David McKay, 1969]. A copy of the letter of authenticity for the Mother Hen design signed by Mary Barelli Gallagher and a Certificate of Authenticity from John Reznikoff, fully describing the hand-painted design, are provided.
