TO ALL CONSUMERS AND RETAIL BUTCHERS OF BROWNSVILLE & EAST NEW YORK… PROTEST AGAINST THE HIGH COST OF MEAT BY COMING TO OUR DEMONSTRATION [IN ENGLISH AND YIDDISH]
New York. 1935. Paperback. 1st Edition. 12 x 9 inches ; Printed broadside. Text in English and Yiddish. Flyer from the historic Butcher Shop Boycott of 1935. “On May 27, 1935, New York City women, organized as the City Action Committee Against the High Cost of Living, picketed butcher shops to demand a reduction in the price of meat. Convinced that wholesalers were withholding meat from the market in order to drive up prices, these wives and mothers determined not to buy meat until the price fell by ten cents per pound. Although it echoed the kosher meat boycotts from the early years of the twentieth century, this boycott, led by veteran organizer Clara Shavelson, crossed religious and racial lines. It was the result of rare cooperation between the Communist-led United Council of Working-Class Women (UCWW) and non-Communist women's groups including neighborhood mother's clubs, church groups, and black women's groups. ” (JWA, 2017; NYTimes, 1935) “This housewives' coalition alleviated the worst effects of the Great Depression in many working-class communities: bringing down food prices, rent, and utility costs; preventing evictions; and spurring the construction of more public housing, schools, and parks. By the end of World War II the housewives' movement had forced the federal government to regulate food and housing costs and to investigate profiteering on staple goods. ” (JWA, 2017) By the time of the 1935 Butcher Strike, Clara Lemlich who led the UCWW had already gained fame as the primary organizer and face of the Uprising of 20, 000, the massive strike of shirtwaist workers in New York's garment industry in 1909. (Wikipedia, 2017) A few tears along the edges, and paper is toning. Overall flyer is in about very good condition. (AMR-52-16) .
