Discrete Ephemera
Atomic Art Publishing, Seattle 1990 - First edition. Small folio (9.5" x 12"). Unpaginated, but approximately 125pp. Frontispiece gelatin silver photograph. Flexible printed cloth secured by three large bolts. Cloth very slightly soiled, still about fine. A printed label inside the front board states that 500 copies were issued, but we have some doubts that there were that number ever completed, given the seeming scarcity and the additional printed note that each copy was "hand made." The limitation statement notes that the Whitney Museum has a copy of the book (which is true). The contents are a mash-up of black and white graphic illustrations and text. Some of the text is by the legendary Steven "Jesse" Bernstein but it's not always clear which parts. The colophon notes that the book is entirely "hand made" except for the photographs, one of which is of the doomed Bernstein, who killed himself in early 1991, not long after this book first appeared. Steven "Jesse" Bernstein was a local fixture in Seattle in the 1980s, opening for a variety of rock acts in their early days, most notably Nirvana. Kurt Cobain, another tortured soul, was a fan of Bernstein. The list of contributors includes other well-known Seattle scenesters, as well as Tom Waits. Much of the graphic art is clearly by the noted Indie comic artist Peter Bagge, who got his start working on the magazine Punk, and is best known for his comic Hate. Very scarce. OCLC locates seven copies over three different records. [Attributes: First Edition]
