The Song of Solomon
London: [Willow Press], 1978. Limited Edition. Leather. Near fine. Allix, Susan. Number 15 of 50, folio size, 20 unnumbered leaves, signed by Susan Allix. Limited edition, number 15 of 50 copies. Susan Allix, a British book artist, has her own press and creates handmade books using a variety of fine papers and textures with letterpress printing and embossing, and is usually the author, illustrator, printer and binder of her works. One of her works was selected for the exhibit "Bookmarking Book Art", held at the Grosvenor Rare Book Room, and are in collections at The British Library, Yale University, National Gallery of Art Washington DC, The Claremont Colleges in California, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and the University of Alberta. The Song of Solomon is her second book, considered by many to be her finest work, and features biblical text accompanied by 21 original etchings and aquatints. "The Song of Solomon" or "The Song of Songs" or "Canticles" is the fifth book of Wisdom in the Old Testament, typically read on the Sabbath over Passover. The intimate verses are a conversation between two lovers, meant to be an allegory for the union between Christ and his Church. ***DESCRIPTION: Original morocco binding by Susan Allix in "Oasis" green, color onlays, hand tooling in gilt and blind to both boards, decorative turn-ins with color onlays, handmade white endpapers, deckled edges, 21 color etchings and aquatints with original tissue guards, 18 point Monotype Bembo italic type, BFK Rives Velin Cuve paper, folio 12 7/8" x 9 3/4", [40], [1, colophon], [3, blank] pp., limited edition, number 15 of 50 copies, signed by Susan Allix. Housed in a green clamshell box with felt lining. ***CONDITION: An absolutely stunning copy, sumptuously bound by the artist's own hand, each binding has hand-tooled decorations that make it unique; the leather binding is smooth and supple, the text block is strong and square with solid hinges, the plates are rich and bright (note that one or two tissue guards are missing), and the volume is entirely free of prior owner markings; this copy is like new; near fine. The clamshell box has some minor evidence of shelf-wear and fraying, but remains strong and sturdy. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell.
