Travels in North America in the Years 1827 and 1828
Edinburgh and London: Cadell and Co + Simpkin and Marshall, 1829 3 Volumes complete, in uniform red half leather with marbled boards, corners and edges lightly worn and bumped. All 3 spines have been relaid retaining most, title in gilt, gilt tooling to the 3 vols. Internally the 3 volumes have a small bookplate to fpds (McClure, Inverness), no half titles, only very light browning or foxing, text block edges speckled in red. Volume 1, coloured pull out map with repaired tear, [2], (iv), (ii), 421 pp. Volume 2, [2], (ii), 432 pp. Volume 3, woodcut of the River Mississippi and the pull out sheet to rear with 4 tables, [3], (vi-vii), [1], 436 pp, all printed by Ballantyne & Company, Pauls Work, Canongate, Edinburgh. Not often see as nice as these! (Sabin 562) (is the Bookplate of McClure. Inverness. that of Sir Robert John Le Mesurier McClure 1807-1873 of Arctic fame?)Hall, naval officer and author, who after retiring from the navy, spent his time in private travel or in literary and scientific pursuits at home. Of his travels in North America in 1827–8, he published a three-volume account in 1829, which was translated into French.
