Deans New Scenic Books No.2 Robinson Crusoe
Dean & Son, Limited, London 1855 - Rare copy of what are generally acknowledged as the first published pop-up books. There were four titles in the series, Aladdin, Robinson Crusoe, Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood. Robinson Crusoe was number two in the series and comprises 8 hand-colored lithographed plates each comprising 3 layer stand up scenes operated by ribbons. Pages are generally clean and bright, especially for age, some slight tanning, some grubby marks, some small stains, small nicks. Corners stubbed, curled. Endpapers are adverts for other Dean publications. Cracked to binding. Covers, pictorial boards, reasonably clean and bright for age, some grubby marks, scuffing, wear patches, some text missing from rear board. Corners, and edges, bumped, rubbed, worn. Spine, black cloth, tiny tears to ends. No publishing date to book but, I believe, this series was published between 1850-1860. Most importantly the eight pop-ups, still with what I believe are the original blue ribbons, are in good working order and in nice clean condition especially for age. Overall, for age, this rare copy is in good clean working order. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
